Lottery Dream Fulfilled for Israeli Couple

JERUSALEM (April 14) — Many of us dream of finding an old lottery ticket deep in our wallet, smoothing it out, and realizing we’ve won millions of dollars. For one Israeli couple, that fantasy became reality when they realized four months late that they had won $20 million — the largest lottery payout in Israel’s history. The anonymous couple in their late 30s claimed their prize on Tuesday. Later they held a news conference wearing red cardboard masks with the Hebrew word “Lotto” on them.

They said the winning ticket was at the bottom of a pile of about 20 old tickets that they were going through. They first thought they had won 5,000 shekels, or about $1,300. The ticket said that for winnings of 5,000 shekels or above they had to go the lottery office. That’s when they found out how much they had won.

“It’s not simple,” the man told the news conference. “We aren’t poor. But it’s disquieting. I’ve nothing to do with that kind of money. We didn’t know about it, who watches TV? I would come each time with a stack of tickets and she’d yell at me.”

The winners wore masks emblazoned with the Hebrew word “Lotto” because they wish to remain anonymous. His wife, wearing a large black sunhat, did not respond. The husband was wearing a bright orange tie and a blue suit jacket that had seen better days. He said his wife was responsible for finding the ticket. “This win is thanks to my wife, who pushed me to go check the tickets because otherwise I wouldn’t have found it,” the man said.

When asked how his life will change, the winner seemed unsure. “Let’s put things in proportion. The first thing I want to do when I get up in the morning is to take a pee. Nothing’s changed. We won’t tell anyone and we won’t tell our kids. The kids don’t know it yet. We don’t know what we’ll tell them and how much we’ll tell them. They’ll come asking for this and that. We won’t change the way we live.” Israelis tend to be more open about money than Americans, with strangers routinely asking each other how much they paid for their apartment or how much they get paid each month. They take great pleasure in getting a good deal and not being a “freyer,” slang for a sucker.

A reporter on Israel radio calculated that the four-month-delay cost the lucky winners about $175,000 and they will have to pay 25 percent income tax. But they’ll still have plenty left over.
